What are the main characteristics of the scheme?
- Aim – The main objective of the scheme is to provide pension amount to workers belonging to the unorganized sector. This amount will be given after the individuals reach their age of retirement.

Amount given in the scheme – The central government has planned to give an amount of rupee 3000 on a monthly basis upon retirement.- Monthly income – The central government has set an income limit, and the individuals have to follow the same to avail the benefits of the scheme.
Half of India’s GDP comes from the sweat and toil of 42 crore workers in the unorganised sector working as street vendors, rickshaw pullers, construction workers, rag pickers, agricultural workers, beedi workers, handloom, leather and in numerous other similar occupations. Domestic workers are also engaged in big numbers
What are the eligibility criteria of the scheme?
- Unorganized sector – The person applying to avail benefits under this scheme should belong to the unorganized sector.
- Monthly income – The person applying for the scheme should not earn a monthly income of more than rupees 15 thousand every month.
- Age limit – The pension facility will be given to the individual only after the person reaches the age of retirement(60 years)
An unorganised sector worker joining pension yojana at the age of 29 years will have to contribute only ` 100 per month till the age of 60 years. A worker joining the pension yojana at 18 years, will have to contribute as little as `55 per month only. The Government will deposit equal matching share in the pension account of the worker every month. It is expected that at least 10 crore labourers and workers in the unorganised sector will avail the benefit of ‘Pradhan Mantri Shram-Yogi Maandhan’ within next five years making it one of the largest pension schemes of the world. A sum of `500 crores has been allocated for the Scheme. Additional funds will be provided as needed. The scheme will also be implemented from the current year.
